Slapper Bars

These are the components that make up the slapper bars.  On the left are pieces made from Evergreen styrene. The bar itself is .080"X.125" strip. The brackets are .25" square, .015" thick. On the right are u-bolts of .020" brass rod, a snubber made from sprue filed to shape, and wire insulation to be used as nuts.

After cutting and drilling the brackets, remove the area that fits over the bar. Careful measuring and cutting will assure a nice, snug fit on the bar. You will need four of these.  Once they are cut out, score lightly along the horizontal line with an X-acto knife, and fold and cement them. On the right are an assembled bar, and the components that make up a bar. These are based on Lakewood bars found in Summit's catalog.

After the brackets are folded, and the cement dried, mount them over the bars (check your measurements to be sure you are spacing them properly; the snubber should align with the eye of the leaf spring), and cement the brackets to the bars. Once the cement has cured, look them over for any minor cleaning up that may need to be done, then paint them. When the paint is dry, add the snubber.

Finally, slip the u-bolts over the leaf springs, and slide them through the holes drilled in the brackets.  Put a dab of CA on the top of the brackets at each point where the u-bolts pass through. Cut some short lengths (1/32") of insulation, and slip them over the ends of the u-bolts to represent nuts (or use your favorite material), detail paint, and voila!  Slapper bars!...Dan Himmel
